Earlier this year, I embarked on an unforgettable trip to São Miguel Island, the largest island in the Azores. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, this charming destination exceeded all our expectations with its breathtaking landscapes. It is also the most populous island and is often referred to as "The Green Island".
The natural beauty of São Miguel was unlike anything we had ever seen, providing endless opportunities for capturing unique photographs. From the rolling hills to the azure waters, every view seemed like it was plucked straight from a postcard.
Exploring the Wonders of São Miguel
Our days were filled with exploration and adventure, each day uncovering a new gem on this stunning island. Here are some of the must-see places that made our trip so special:
Sete Cidades
This twin lake, located in a massive volcanic crater, is one of the most iconic sights in the Azores. The contrast between the blue and green lakes was a sight to behold, and the panoramic views from the surrounding viewpoints were simply spectacular.
Sete Cidades is famous for its twin lakes, Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul, each with a distinct color. We took a walk along the lush pathways next to the water, reminding us of a jungle with its dense foliage and serene ambiance.

Lagoa do Congro
Located in a tranquil forest, Lagoa do Congro is a hidden gem that exudes peace and natural beauty. Surrounded by dense greenery, this crater lake offers a serene atmosphere perfect for reflection and relaxation. The calm waters mirror the lush vegetation, creating a picturesque scene that feels like a step back in time.

Ponta Delgada City
Ponta Delgada is the capital of São Miguel and a hub of culture and history. We strolled through its charming streets, admiring the blend of modernity and tradition. The historic architecture, bustling markets, and friendly locals made our city tour an enriching experience. Notable landmarks like the Portas da Cidade and the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião are must-see spots.
Santa Bárbara Beach
Watching the sunset at Santa Bárbara Beach was a highlight of our first day. Framed by dramatic cliffs and rolling waves, it offered a perfect vantage point to witness the sun dip below the horizon. The colors of the sky reflecting on the water created a magical end to our day.

Terra Nostra Park and Caldeira Velha
Terra Nostra Park is a botanical paradise in the heart of Furnas, renowned for its exotic plants and thermal hot springs. We soaked in the warm, mineral-rich waters of the thermal pool, surrounded by lush gardens. Nearby, Caldeira Velha offered a different thermal experience with its hot waterfall and natural bathing pools, set against a backdrop of verdant forest.
Lagoa do Fogo
Lagoa do Fogo, or "Lake of Fire," is a pristine crater lake high in the mountains. The panoramic views from the top are simply awe-inspiring, with the crystal-clear blue water contrasting against the surrounding green hills. The untouched beauty of this place made it one of our favorite stops.

Tea Plantation
The Gorreana Tea Plantation, the only one in Europe, offered us a glimpse into the traditional tea-making process. We enjoyed tasting the locally produced tea while learning about the plantation's history and sustainable practices.

Furnas
Furnas is a geothermal wonderland known for its bubbling caldeiras and therapeutic hot springs. We explored the fumaroles and geysers, marveled at the natural hot springs, and enjoyed the famous "Cozido das Furnas," a traditional meal cooked using geothermal heat. The viewpoints around Furnas provided stunning vistas of the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Capturing the Magic
The island’s unique landscapes provided endless inspiration, and I found myself constantly reaching for my camera. Whether it was the misty mornings over Sete Cidades or the vibrant sunsets at Ponta da Ferraria, each moment was a testament to the island’s raw beauty.

An Anecdote to Remember
One famous anecdote related to the Azores is the legend of the “Blue and Green Eyes” of Sete Cidades. According to local folklore, a princess with blue eyes and a shepherd with green eyes fell deeply in love. However, their love was forbidden, and they were forced to part. As they said their tearful goodbyes, their tears formed the two lakes of Sete Cidades—one blue and one green, reflecting the colors of their eyes. This story adds a layer of magic to an already enchanting location, reminding visitors of the deep connection between the island’s natural beauty and its rich cultural heritage.
Our trip to Ponta Delgada was an unforgettable experience, filled with stunning landscapes and unique photographic opportunities. It’s a destination that truly captures the heart and leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend exploring the Azores—you won’t be disappointed.
